Overview[]
Varzah, also known as the Torchbearer, is a supporting antagonist who appears in Garten of Banban VIII: Anti Devil. He is a member of the new Reclamation Team, tasked with killing fugitives and enemies of Syringeon.
Personality[]
Varzah comes across as aggressive, arrogant and cruel, taking pleasure in burning down a neighboring village within Zolphius’s stomach, an act that led the Givanium villagers to wrongly blame Flumbo as the perpetrator. This not only shows his willingness to harm others for his own gain, but also highlights his hatred for Flumbo, who he saw as not being “better than any of us.” He also demonstrates a sense of easily-angered sore retribution, as he later sets the Givanium Elder’s village on fire in retaliation for the Player defeating him earlier in a cave and even threatened to return in Garten of Banban: Last Ticket to the Abyss for a rematch to kill the Player.
Appearance[]
Varzah is a green hyena with sharp fangs who often has his tongue sticking out. He wears a shock collar around his neck, like Clawrenzo and Miss Mimicker. He is always seen carrying a torch, with a Banban plush strapped to his back by a metal-like belt, and his body is covered in Givanium.
Gameplay[]
When the Player enters a cave near the destroyed village, Varzah drops from the ceiling and begins chasing them. If the Player gets too close, he will use his torch to breathe fire, instantly killing them if they are within range. After several failed attempts, Varzah becomes thirsty and runs to drink from a hole. The Player must then shoot the holes he drinks from, so that when he tries to use his fire again, it explodes in his face, causing him to faint. After this boss fight, the Givanium Elder arrives, sees the unconscious Varzah and apologizes to the Player for suspecting them and Flumbo.
Later, the Givanium Elder mentions that Varzah is still alive and had set the Givanium Village on fire.
He later appears again during the Miss Mimicker chase, blocking an exit. At the end of the chase, he tells Flumbo that he was "not better than any of [them]", vowing they haven’t seen the last of him before retreating into the darkness and disappearing for the rest of the game.
Trivia[]
- Varzah, like Clawrenzo, was hinted at by Faris on Discord.
- It is unknown why he carries a Banban plush with him. It's possible that he used to see Banban as an idol and a friend, but as Syringeon made Varzah his puppet, he strapped a Banban plush on his back, possibly to hide the injuries Syringeon inflicted on him.
- Varzah is one of five Garten of Banban VIII: Anti Devil characters whose names were leaked on Trademarkia, the others being Flumbo, Clawrenzo, Miss Mimicker, and Oony Balloony.
- Varzah is the first character in the series whose name starts with the letter V.
- The Euphoric Brothers confirmed that Varzah’s appearance is the result of being badly burnt multiple times, which caused his outer layer of skin to completely come off. They also stated that he was originally yellow, as shown in the new Reclamation Team icon, rather than green.
- This may be why he often becomes thirsty during his bossfight.
- Varzah is the only Reclamation Team Member to have a shock collar around his neck and to not be deceased yet.
